Modern life is difficult, tricky to navigate, yet for the majority it is more comfortable and indeed safe than ever before.

Human ingenuity has outstripped human evolution producing a world that we are not wholly equipped to deal with or to thrive within. What we view as ’normal’ is far from natural for the human species. Our sense of well-being, our health and ultimately our lifespan can easily be negatively affected by our modern lifestyles and the environment we live in.

Well-being

(Short term)

To live well right now (in this moment) we not only need to be physically healthy but to be emotionally healthy too. To see a bright future but also be content with what we currently have and who we currently are.

Health

(Medium Long term)

To delay or prevent cancer and cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases (the major causes of ill health and mortality). The absence of disease, pain and restriction. Also, to have sufficient aerobic fitness, strength, range of motion and balance to enjoy life. Cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases alongside cancer are the most prevalent causes of ill-health and ultimately death.

Lifespan

(Long term)

In our safe modern world most people die of chronic death. Thats is to say that deaths from accidents, acute trauma and illness have fallen dramatically and so most of us will die from an illness that begins many years if not many decades earlier. They can be prevented much more easily and effectively than they can be cured or reversed but unfortunately modern medical practices focus on managing these diseases once signs or symptoms have arisen. Medicines focus on prolonging life but less on prolonging healthy life.” Even if you do not want to live forever I think most of us would want to avoid a life in which the final decade is spent in very poor health and social isolation.

The good news here is two-fold:
