Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating

For so many years we have been fed misinformation about food! This has made healthy eating much harder. There are many ‘facts’ that we carry around in our heads that we don’t necessarily question or analyse such as ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’, ‘fat is bad’ or ‘fruit is healthy’. Sound familiar? Our beliefs about food, nutrition and cooking have been heavily influenced by parents, the media and the government and as a result our food choices and eating habits have been dictated without us even knowing it.

Unpacking the Food Dilemma: From Processing to Fad Diets

Largely since the war years, there has been a drive to produce and transport food as cheaply as possible in order to feed the population and also to maximise profits. Food is now very easy to obtain and allied to the marketing power of big corporations, we are almost universally eating too many highly processed foods (UPFs) and too much food in general. Often this food is low in nutritional value. We have been encouraged to follow fad diets that omit certain food groups, enforce mass calorie cutting or the over-reliance on artificial ‘diet’ products, but these are often not manageable for more than a few weeks or months and short term weight loss often leads to greater weight gain in the future as we binge and crash out of the restrictive lifestyle.
